3.1.6.4.1.1. Advantages and disadvantages / limitations of single methods

  Advantages Disadvantages / limitations

Full-text search (text and number)

  • A full-text search can also be performed for parts without geometry or if there is no reference part available for a geometric search

  • ERP/PDM information is automatically queried in the same run.

Material, surface, preferred parts, released parts, standard parts, etc.

  • In principle suited for all types of parts (also for parts without geometry and electromagnetic parts)

  • Search term is not known

  • Different search terms for one and the same

  • No textual information available (company parts)

Variables search
  • Simple use of logical operators such as "greater", "smaller", "from - to", etc.

  • Direct access to classified attributes such as order number

  • Search via common variables of the selected directory level

  • No textual information available (company parts)

Geometric search (3D)

  • Independent of textual information

Especially useful at company parts without classification or parts not registered in the ERP/PDM

  • Even useful during the first steps of modelling (prevention of duplicates)

  • No expert knowledge required concerning naming of parts

  • Reference part required

  • Does not lead to satisfying results at all types of parts (parts without geometry, electromagnetic parts)

Sketch search (2D)

  • Independent of textual information and usable without reference part

  • cross-departmental, easy to use

  • No expert knowledge required concerning naming of parts

  • Step-by-step approach to the desired part

Result parts of a search provide (new) search terms and may serve as reference part for further deepening queries

  • Does not lead to satisfying results at all types of parts (parts without geometry, electromagnetic parts)

Topology search

  • Especially useful where single attributes are more characteristic than the outer form.

  • Independent of textual information and can be performed without reference part

  • Search in large assemblies independently of the total geometry

  • Step-by-step approach to the desired part

Result parts of a search provide (new) search terms and may serve as reference part for further deepening queries

  • Does not lead to satisfying results at all types of parts (parts without geometry, electromagnetic parts)
