歷史


在2014年2月，布萊恩·梅，天文物理學家兼皇后樂團的吉他手，開始與電影導演Grigorij Richters（英语：Grigorij Richters）合作製作電影北緯51度（英语：51 Degrees North），故事虛構小行星撞擊倫敦，和由此事件造成的人類態度[10][11][12]。這部影片在2014年的Starmus Festival（英语：Starmus Festival）放映之後，Richters和梅在2014年10月共同倡議創建小行星日，他們與馬丁·里斯、Rusty Schweickart（英语：Rusty Schweickart）、Ed Lu（英语：Ed Lu）、Thomas Jones（英语：Thomas David Jones）、Ryan Watt和比爾·奈伊共同召開記者會，發布此一新聞。此一事件透過串流從位於倫敦的倫敦科學博物館、加州科學院和紐約聖保羅直播[2]。



小行星日宣言


小行星日的工作小組創建的宣言被稱為"100 X宣言"，呼籲所有的科學家和技術人員支援拯救地球免於小行星威脅的想法，不只是學者、專家可以簽署，每個人可以簽署這項聲明（宣言）[8][13][14]。

主要有三個目標：

1.通過政府、個人和慈善組織，利用現有的技術來檢測和追蹤對人類有威脅的近地小行星。

2. 在未來的十年內，快速提升百倍發現和追蹤小行星的能力，達到每年100,000顆。

3. 全球接受每年6月30日 －聯合國認可－ 為小行星日。經由我們的努力，提高警覺，以防止小行星撞擊和可能的危險[15]。



2015-2016的小行星日


依據AsteroidDay.org的網站，在最初的兩年，全球有78個國家，超過600個活動在6月30日進行[16]，有41位太空人參加了當天的活動[17]，總體目標是提高對近地小行星撞擊與威脅地球的認知。像是維也納自然史博物館（英语：Natural History Museum in Vienna）這類的機構[18]、美國自然史博物館[19]、加州科學院[20]、倫敦的科學博物館[21]、SETI協會,[22]、歐洲太空總署[23]、英國太空局[24]，還有其它機構參加了教育活動。2015年6月30日舉行第一次的小行星日。



聯合國


在2016年2月，羅馬尼亞太空人Dumitru Prunariu（英语：Dumitru Prunariu）和太空探索協會（英语：Association of Space Explorers）提交建議書給聯合國的科學和技術小組委員會。這個小組接受了提議，並將建議納入2016年6月的聯合國和平利用外太空委員會報告中。委員會的報告於2016年12月6日在聯合國第71屆大會被認可[25]。

聯合國在其決議中宣布："每年的6月30日是全球小行星觀測日，以全球的高度來紀念1908年6月30日發生在前蘇聯西伯利亞的通古斯事件， 並提高公眾對小行星撞擊與危害的認識[3]。"
