Egan Arley Bernal Gómez (born 13 January 1997) is a Colombian cyclist, who rides for UCI WorldTeam Team Ineos.[5] He won the 2019 Tour de France, becoming the first Latin American winner of the race.[6][7]

Early life

Bernal was born in Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. He the oldest child of Germán (an employee at the Salt Cathedral) and Flor (a flower factory worker), and raised in the nearby town of Zipaquirá. His father had been a keen amateur cyclist, and he started riding on a second hand bicycle at age five. At nine he entered, against his father's wishes, and easily won, a race in his home town, the prize for which included a training scholarship.[1][8]

He initially focused on, and excelled at, mountain biking, winning races in Brazil, Costa Rica and the US and getting both silver (2014) and bronze (2015) in the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships junior cross country events.[9]

Professional road racing

Alongside mountain biking, Bernal had begun to gain success in junior road racing both in Colombia and Italy, winning the Clasica Juventudes Cajica[10] and the Sognando Il Giro delle Fiandre[11] in 2015.

2016–17

Bernal was signed by Gianni Savio to the Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec team on a four year contract, partly on the evidence of a VO2 max reading of 88.8ml/kg/min provided by his agent, Paolo Alberati. He began racing among seniors straight away, bypassing the usual U23 career route. In 2016, he obtained top 20 results in the La Méditerranéenne, the GP Industria & Artigianato, Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali and Giro del Trentino, before winning the (then) lower level Tour of Bihor and coming fourth in both the Tour de Slovenie and the Tour de l'Avenir.

2017 saw top ten finishes for Bernal in the Vuelta a San Juan and the Tour de Langkawi. He later finished third overall in the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, second in the Giro dell'Appennino, and ninth in the Tour of the Alps. His first professional wins came in the Sibiu Cycling Tour, with two stage victories as well as the overall. He also won two stages and the overall title at the Tour de l'Avenir, and, although he was still under contract to Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec, Bernal signed a five year deal with Team Sky from the 2018 season.[4] He completed his time in Savio's team with fifth in the Giro della Toscana and top twenty places in Giro dell'Emilia, Milano–Torino and his first monument, Il Lombardia.

2018

Bernal made his debut for Team Sky in the Tour Down Under as team leader,[12] where he won the young rider classification and finished in 6th place in the overall standings. In February 2018, Bernal won the Colombian National Time Trial Championships. He then celebrated his first victory with Team Sky by winning the overall standings at the first edition of the Tour Colombia (Colombia Oro y Paz), with Nairo Quintana placing second. Bernal secured the overall victory after attacking on the final 20-kilometre (12-mile) climb on the last day before finishing second. Bernal won despite the fact that his fellow Colombian teammate Sergio Henao was originally designated as team leader.[13] Of his victory, Bernal said,

It's an important victory for many reasons. It's one of my first races with the team, it's the first race I've won with the team, and then because it's in Colombia. It's the first 2.1 race in Colombia and I've won it, so it's something special.[citation needed]

After the race, Team Sky's directeur sportif Nicolas Portal commented on his development saying;

We have some guys where they're in the team to win, and some guys we want to develop. Probably in other teams he could be a leader in every single race but we want to give him the opportunity to work with the best, see what he can do, then when he's going to be the big, big leader he will know exactly what to expect.[citation needed]

Bernal's next race was the Volta a Catalunya. On stage four, a mountain top finish at La Molina, Bernal and Pierre Latour (AG2R La Mondiale) were the only two riders able to respond when the Movistar Team trident of Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana and Marc Soler forced the selection in the final seven kilometres of the stage. Bernal tried to attack the trio and eventually distanced Soler but then Quintana and Valverde worked him over, with Valverde eventually out-sprinting Bernal to win the stage. Bernal crashed out of the race whilst placed second overall, and leading the young rider classification, on the final stage in Barcelona after José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar Team) fell in front of him on a wet descent.[14] Bernal suffered clavicular and scapular fractures in the crash.[15]

The following month, Bernal competed in the Tour de Romandie, again as the team leader. Bernal won stage three of the race, which was an individual time trial, finishing four seconds ahead of eventual race winner Primož Roglič.[16] He finished second overall in the race, winning the young rider classification. In May, Bernal achieved his biggest win for 2018, when he finished first overall in the Tour of California, finishing over a minute ahead of second placed rider Tejay van Garderen.[17] On stage two, Bernal attacked on a climb two kilometers from the finish, which allowed him to win the stage by over twenty seconds.[18] He also took the overall lead, but soon lost it to van Garderen after losing time on stage four, a time trial. On stage six, the queen stage, Bernal attacked on the final climb, distancing all of the other riders. He won the stage with a 1:28 gap over Adam Yates.[19] He took the overall lead back after the stage, and successfully defended it on the final stage.

In July 2018, he was named in the start list for the Tour de France.[20] Bernal rode as a domestique for team leaders Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas. He was the youngest participant in the race, and was still able to drop many contenders in the mountains.[21]

2019

Bernal started his 2019 season in Colombia. He rode in the national championships and in his home stage race, the Tour Colombia. Bernal, however, was unable to defend his title in the race, finishing fourth overall. Bernal later went to Europe to compete in Paris–Nice. The Colombian impressed in the crosswinds, the individual time trial, and in the mountains, claiming the overall victory ahead of Nairo Quintana.[22]

Bernal's success in stage races continued, finishing third in the Volta a Catalunya, and winning a stage and the overall classification in the Tour de Suisse.

Tour de France victory

Bernal was elevated to be co-leader of the team with defending champion Geraint Thomas for the Tour de France, due to the absence of injured Chris Froome. After the stage 2 team time trial he had a top ten position in the general classification, which he retained, despite an unimpressive individual time trial performance, into the three decisive alpine stages. A late attack on stage 18 saw him move into second place overall, ahead of Thomas, and he took the yellow jersey as race leader on stage 19 after an attack on the Col de l'Iseran. The stage was shortened because of landslides and a severe hail storm with 38 km remaining. Although the stage positions were considered null, times were taken at the top of the Iseran, putting Bernal in the lead, forty five seconds ahead of previous leader Julian Alaphilippe and one minute and eleven seconds over Thomas. He defended his lead on stage 20, another mountain stage, and confirmed his victory with the largely ceremonial ride onto the Champs Elysees in Paris. He thus became the first Colombian to win the Tour de France, and also won the best young rider competition. He is the youngest winner since 1909[23] and the third youngest ever at 22 years, 196 days.[24]
