(EN) PARTcloud.net member: Adam Robinson

  • We would like to introduce our most active members on PARTcloud.net every two weeks. The goal is to find out more about them, but also to show our appreciation for their contribution.

    1. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your background?

    I have an Associate’s Degree in Drafting & Design from Jefferson Davis Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from Auburn University. I'm an INFJ type personality who has developed the interest in being a CAD guru.


    2. What software(s) do you use?

    Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, 3DS Max. I have experience with Solidworks and Keyshot.


    3. When and how did you start with 3D modeling and what was your first model?

    Either late 2007 or early 2008. In my Drafting and Design program. A polygonal shape generated from orthographic views using AutoCAD 2007.


    4. What are your favorite modeling subjects/themes?

    Video Game related themes, Swords/Weapons, Science Fiction, Abstract, Vehicles.


    5. Are you also into 3D printing?

    I like the idea of it. I just wish I had my own 3D printer.


    6. Is there any specific 3D model you are proud of and why?

    My Pillar of Autumn: Halo Reach version. The first time I built it, it was for a school assignment for learning Solidworks. It took me all weekend to build it. Coming back to it later for a major redesign makes me proud to see how far my skills have come, or just what I can do with given more time to do it. I also built it 1:1 scale, which is about 1 mile (1.6km) in length, so it's also my biggest model. It was quite the challenge and was fun to make.




    7.What was the most challenging project you have done?

    My sponsored studio by Charbroil. In school we had a class assignment for the semester to design grill accessories. There was first research, testing, designing, redesigning, and final prototyping. Two prototypes were required by the end of the studio. One of the prototypes was made out of sheet metal, which I haven't tried using before. It was fun cutting the metal with a plasma torch. I then had to add hinges to it so the prototype could fold on itself. The other model was made of silicon rubber, which I had to make a mold for it in CAD and used the CNC machine to cut the mold out of foam. I first tried polyurethane foam which expands about 10x after it's mixed and that turned out to be a mess. It also basically glued my molds together. I learned a lot that semester.


    8. As one of our most active members on PARTcloud.net, what do you find so attractive about it?

    The weekly challenges. I get bored at work so I like having ideas of things I could model. Especially things I haven't tried to model before. I like the competition between other members because I want to be strong in my 3D modeling skills. Competition with other members who are a lot better than I am can help me become better by pushing me to be better.


    9. What features in PARTcommunity/PARTcloud would you like to see in the future?

    Maybe to promote something like designs that could be used by NASA to help innovate ideas for future space exploration and settling on Mars.


    10. Do you have any other hobbies?

    I'm also a musician. I've been playing drums for 13 years now, though I hate calling that a hobby. It's more of a life passion. I prefer it to be more of a full-time thing. I also play Video Games when not at work. PC Master Race. I'm learning more about computers so I have more confidence to build my own super computer. I also enjoy reading about new technologies I happen to have an interest in. I also like hearing about new Astrophysical discoveries. I'm fascinated by the cosmos.


    11. Do you have any goals for the future regarding 3D modeling?

    Organic modeling. It may require different software, but I want to get to where I can create organic solid objects instead of just your typical geometric ones.


    12. What advice would you give to beginners?

    The journey ahead is long and full of hard work, but along the way fulfilling by turning your ideas into reality.
