  • We would like to introduce our most active members on PARTcloud.net every two weeks. The goal is to find out more about them, but also to show our appreciation for their contribution.

    February 2018: Gérard Dupainsec

    1. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your background?

I am a French, industrial draftsman and I work for a lighting automotive company.

    2. What software(s) do you use?

I use Solidworks (modeling and rendering mechanical parts), Blender (modeling, animating “biologic“ parts), Gimp (editing and textures) and Mandelbulb3D (to do fantasy background).

    3. When and how did you start with 3D modeling and what was your first model?

Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was a little boy who liked to draw... (Yes, a personal computer wasn't really widely used at that time). I started to draw in 2D (Missler, Autocad2D), because it was a part of my job description. When 3D modeling became popular, I learned it, because I required it for my job; Unigraphic (2003), Solidedge (2005) and Solidworks (2006).

Soon, I started using Solidworks for 3D realistic renderings. I used it for personal needs  and that was the time when I started with some serious 3D modeling.

    4. What are your favorite modeling subjects/themes?

Science fiction and vehicles, but in modeling everything new is a passion.

    5. Are you also into 3D printing?

    Not at the moment.

    6. Is there any specific 3D model you are really proud off and why?

Every new model is a satisfaction, which I am proud of.

Still, if I have to choose the specific model, this would be my choice:

To create this model was a personal challenge (no picture existing –only the left side drawing, had to do some researching regarding technical documentation, modeling complex surfaces). It was the longest project I ever did and it took me one year to finish it!

    7. What was the most challenging project you have done?

A personal project: my wooden house completely drawn in Solidworks and then built by myself (more than 2 years).

    8. As one of our most active members on PARTcloud.net, what do you find so attractive about it?

Exchanging ideas, learning new things and pushing yourself beyond your boundaries (your 3D challenges).

    9. What features in PARTcommunity/PARTcloud would you like to see in the future?

More explanation about how the challenge entries are doing (a step by step guide - intermediate results of the work) included with the entries. Jury can evaluate the entry better and community members could learn more.

    10. Do you have any other hobbies?

Restoration of old furniture, cars and motorcycles.

    11. Do you have any goals for the future regarding 3D modeling?

To create more sculpting models, background with Blender and also to finish my Sausage movie!

    12. What advise would you give to beginners?

If you are afraid of 3D modeling, be patient and don't forget that complicated things are nothing, but a lot of simple things.

Be patient…. 30 years difference between these 2 pictures!
