3.1.1.6.4.5.  Sketch search (2D)

Creating sketches is simple and fast.

The Sketch search (2D) is useful when there is no reference part available for a Geometric search (3D). In a second step you can possibly perform a Geometric search (3D).

All search methods can be combined with each other, except Sketch search (2D) and Geometric search (3D).

The Sketch search (2D) works well, when a special characteristic is given which ideally can be described with one simple sketch.

[Note] Note

The proportion between sketches matters, but not the absolute size. The crosshairs help keeping the proportion.

With a click on a cube face you can turn it in the foreground.

The button "Edit" is only displayed in the Admin mode. On this see Suchvorlage definieren.

The button "Edit" is only displayed in the Admin mode. On this see Section 1.2.5, “ Define search template ” in PARTsolutions / PARTcommunity4Enterprise - Administration Manual.

In the following sections first you can find an example, then a description on different methods of operation, the description of the setting options and a detailed description of the drawing tools.

3.1.1.6.4.5.1.  Example

In the following a hand wheel shall be drawn and all needed steps explained:

  1. Draw the first view on the front cube face. With click on a cube face you can turn it in the foreground anytime and then edit.

    [Note] Note

The more characteristic a feature is, the less sketches are needed. The hand wheel for example is so typical that actually one sketch is sufficient.

  13. Draw a second view of the hand wheel using the brush. The needed option is already selected.

    Draw second view

  14. Close the 2D sketching dialog box with Commit or Commit and Search.

  15. Under Project selection -> Search in select the desired setting (here in the example "Current selection (DIN)").

  16. Settings:

-> The search results are listed below.

When you move the mouse cursor over a line, different icons are displayed (context dependent):

    Open:

The part is opened in the Part view of PARTdataManager.

    Load as first part:

The part is added to the part comparison and furthermore marked as first part, thus is loaded into the 2D/3D comparison. The line is marked with an icon .

    Load as second part:

The part is added to the part comparison and furthermore marked as second part, thus is loaded into the 2D/3D comparison. The line is marked with an icon .

    Add to part compare:

    Export to CAD:

The icon is only displayed at single parts (characteristics), not at part families: With click on the icon the respective part is transferred to the CAD system.

You can find detailed information on Part comparison under Section 3.1.1.6.10, “ Part comparison ”.

[Note] Note

The history of created sketches is saved and displayed on the left side in the Sketch search (2D) dialog box. So you can easily later use the sketches again and - if needed - edit (adjust) before.

3.1.1.6.4.5.2. Different operation methods of sketch search
3.1.1.6.4.5.2.1. Create sketch from picture

In the following you can see how to create a sketch by importing a picture.

  1. Call Sketch search (2D).

-> The same-named dialog box opens.

  2. Click on the icon Import drawing and insert the desired image via Explorer. (Possible image formats are image formats are jpg, gif and png.) Just as well you can insert the image directly with Ctrl+V

  2. 3 sketch views are automatically generated and displayed in the Import drawing dialog box.

If the Convert to black-and-white image option is activated, you can optionally use the Reverse colors and Adjust lightness function before the import.

With OK the drawings are overtaken and displayed in the list of search methods.

  3. When clicking on the link Sketch search (2D) the dialog box to edit the sketches opens. Now you can use the sketches in the current state or optionally modify them first and then use them for the "Sketch search (2D)".

You can find details on the sketcher under Section 3.1.1.6.4.5.4, “ Drawing Tools”.

3.1.1.6.4.5.2.3. Create sketches manually

Create sketches manually in the sketcher. See Section 3.1.1.6.4.5.4, “ Drawing Tools”.

3.1.1.6.4.5.3.  Settings / Actions
  • Minimum similarity:

Basically applies: The higher the value, the quicker the search and the less results.

If only little catalogs shall be searched, the differences between search times are relatively small. However when a search is performed over hundreds of catalogs differences may occur.

  • Select search template:

    • Search by Sketch (monochrome)

    • Sketch search (color)

  • Edit search templates:

The Edit button is only displayed in Admin mode! (You can see your current status downright: User or Admin)

The number of search templates depends on administrative presettings.

You can find detailed information on this under Section 1.2.5, “ Define search template ” in PARTsolutions / PARTcommunity4Enterprise - Administration Manual.

  • Actions

In the Sketch search (2D) dialog box you can perform the following actions:

    Commit

Takes over all changes and closes the dialog box.

Start Sketch search (2D) via Start search.

    Cancel

Closes the dialog box without saving any changes.

The following tools are available for drawing the sketch:

Choose color for painting / Choose erasing color

Switch between different drawing colors and erasing color.

If the color feature has been used in the part creation, now when using the sketch search the result quality can be enhanced by using colors in the drawing.[a]
